ON a memorable day for Merriwa, the girls of Division Three Blue won the first flag since the men's section won two in 2006/07 - and they did in great style by taking all three rinks against Warnbro.
Amid great excitement Marj Morton got the shot bowl with the last delivery of the match with the aggregate safely in the bag, 59-36.
Warnbro arrived at Osborne Park in confident mood after crushing Belmont City at Merriwa the previous day but they found Merriwa in scintillating form on a grass green much slower than the home surface on which they had beaten Pickering Brook.
The ultimate satisfaction was the fact that all the players rose to the occasion - but special mention must go to Kaye Gedling. Her immaculate drawing game was not far short of Premier class. Such a pity that she took so long to take up the game. It was the best performance (man or woman) from a Merriwa player this season.
In such an atmosphere - five greens of champion players from Premier division to Division Four - it would have been easy for players to freeze. Instead the exact opposite for a team that was a class above the opposition and then showed they were the best of the best.
TUESDAY MARCH 19:
GO GIRLS! All smiles before the game with Pickering Brook and fortunately all smiles afterwards. The new greens received a fitting baptism with four teams battling it out for the flag. Merriwa and Warnbro got through to tomorrow's final at Osborne Park.

MERRIWA Ladies are one win away from bringing the flag to the club for the first time in 12 years, after a convincing 62-39 victory in the first play-off game against Pickering Brook.
Champions of Division Three Blue, Merriwa now face Warnbro, who crushed Belmont City 95-43, at Osborne Park on Wednesday March 20 (10am start).
The opening games were held at Merriwa in front of a noisy crowd, which saw some excellent bowling, especially from the Maggie Edgar rink of Roberta Creswell, Elizabeth Jacksson and Joy Gillian, who lost the first three ends and the last three but in between amassed 28 shots for a 28-9 success.
Kaye Gedling, Barbara Wilkins, Val Ikin and Julia Barron ground out a 20-14 win with Gayle Harding, Alison Turner, Mimi van Heeswijk and Marj Morton just being edged out 16-14.
The men's section won two flags in 2006/07, while the women last won the flag in 2001.
And now for Saturday...
FIVE of the flag-winning girls will be in action again on Saturday, fighting for the Division Three flag against Mundaring (9 30am). If they win that they will play either Perth & Tatts or Rockingham in the afternoon. All the games will be held at Merriwa.
The five are: Julia Barron, Maggie Edgar, Kaye Gedling, Joy Gillian and Barbara Wilkins. They will be joined by Gail Kempton, Fay Stanley and Veronia Thysse.
The rinks are: Gedling, Stanley, Gillian, Barron
Thysse, Wilkins, Kempton, Edgar.
Dennis and Grahame do it again!

Senior Masters 2019

Estate manager Karen Huyton presented the trophy to Josef Rollni and Brian Kapitzke, who beat Les Mikowiec and Lionel Peacock
A MAGNIFICENT tournament from Les Mikowiec and Lionel Peacock fell at the final hurdle in the Ian Edgar-organised Senior Masters held at Merriwa.
Having battled their way through three unbeaten Group games and two games on finals day, the Merriwa pair lost out to Valley's Josef Rollnik and Brian Kapitzke, who picked up a first prize of $900.
It was the battle of the underdogs as both sides had beaten pairs playing at a far higher pennant level. Indeed Les and Josef had competed against each other last season. Josef and Brian currently play in Valley's Division Two Blue side.
It was Josef's second success in the competition. He won it in 2013 when it was held at Ian's old club Hollywood.
Results: Quarter Finals
Carbone/Nicol beat Mulenger/Manton 16-7;
Rollnik/Kapitzke beat Perica/Terrall 12- 4;
Roberts/Hammond beat Buchholz/Sarich 13-5;
Peacock/Mikowiec beat McMurdo/Whitman 11-6
Semi- finals: Rollnik/Kapitzke beat
Carbone/Nicol 10-6; Peacock/Mikowiec beat
Roberts/Hammond 11-9
Finals: Josef Rollnik/Brian Kapitzke beat Lionel Peacock/Les Mikowiec 20- 7
3/4: Carbone/Nicol beat Roberts/Hammond19-10

SIXTY members turned up on Sunday (December 9) to celebrate the exciting new chapter in the bowling club's history with the opening of the new synthetic greens.
B Green has now been used for pennant games last Thursday and Saturday and A Green is being inspected on Thursday and is expected to be given the green light by Bowls WA.
President Ian Edgar presented the new jacks to the sponsors - members of the club - and they were then given to former president Audrey Patterson to be put away for future use.
Work started in October with the old greens ripped up. Preparatory work took a little longer than expected but bowlers are happy with the new conditions - particularly if the initial results are a guide to the future.
The president went into hospital for an emergency operation as the project neared its close and he thanked Des Jones for taking over as project manager. Other members who gave up much of their time to roll and water are Les Mikowiec, Bob Gillian, Len Paterson, Alan Mynott and others.
