ALAN ARTER'S rink, badly beaten on Monday, bounced back to win a gripping game two days later to move to the top of the ladder in this round robin event.
Eleven of the 12 ends they won were singles in a high quality, hard fought clash against Graeme Winter, Karl Schuller, Les Mikowiec ad Bob Gillian, who until recently had a spell as a pennant rink.
Alan, Ian Edgar, Ray Slimper and Kevin Adams were thrashed two days earlier by the Steve Appleton rink that is playing all its matches on a Monday, which has left the ladder slightly unbalanced with the Steve Szonyi rink having played only once.
Needing four to tie on the last end, Bob's men took the only three of the contest to end up one short, beaten 13-12.
DEFENDING champions Steve Appleton and Bob Barsden put themselves back in contention with an impressive 26-11 win in their second game, after a drubbing in their opener.
Steve, Bob, Ronnie Futter, who missed last season's final, and Peter Cutten won 12 of the 18 ends against Ian Edgar, Ray Slimper, Kevin Adams and Alan Arter but their shot difference is still in the red (36-38). Alan's rink is still above them with a shot difference of plus two.
Steve's men built up a 13-5 lead but were pegged back to 13-9 before dominating the second half of the match in what turned out to be a surprisingly one-sided affair.
TWO ends that accounted for more than half their total gave Steve Szonyi's rink a 19-17 win in their opening game of this round robin competition against a Barry Whinfield four that has now lost twice.
Barry, Merv Davies, Bill Nicoll and Clive de Ridder were left wondering how they let the game slip from their grasp, having taken an 8-0 lead on three ends and 17-14 with two ends to go. But in times of crisis Steve, Alan Turner, Brian Barron and Peter Blake got themselves out of trouble in dramatic fashion. On the fourth end they took seven shots to virtually wipe out that initial deficit and picked up four shots on the penultimate end to edge a shot clear.
There were some impressive individual performances, notably from the two leads, both using an arm and Bill who drew well, particularly on the wide side, and ditched the jack with his only drive of the game.
CHAMPIONS Steve Appleton, Bob Barsden and Ronnie Futter, who missed last season's final, began their defence with a defeat - but that is not the end of their chances of retaining the title.
They lost a game last season but beat Lionel Peacock's team in the KO final.
On Monday - two days ahead of schedule - Steve, Bob, Ronnie and Peter Cutten lost 27-10 to Graeme Winter, Karl Schuller, Les Mikowiec and Bob Gillian, who looked anything but winners in the early stages.
Steve's men took the first four ends to lead 7-0 but when lead Graeme found his range the game turned on its head. By the time they scored again on the 14th end they were 17-7 adrift before scoring two shots on the final end.
With the original first round postponed, the final round will now be on March 3.
Alan Arter's rink carried too much firepower for Barry Whinfield's men who suffered a 23-7 defeat.
With Lindsay Marsh out with a back problem Ray Slimper came in to join Alan, Ian Edgar and Kevin Adams, team mates in pennants on Thursday and Saturday.
Any chance that Barry, Merv Davies, Bill Nicoll and Clive de Ridder had of staging a revival from a score of 11-3 was snuffed out in the next three ends when nine shots took the lead to 20-3.
