IF Merriwa were looking for a morale-boosting success over Yokine before Saturday's must-win clash against fellow relegation strugglers they were both disappointed. However, they did have two rink victories but the aggregate was lost because of a stunning 33-13 defeat for Merriwa's top rink skipped by Alan Arter. There was still a chance of an overall victory but Alan, Ian Edgar, Les Kempton, filling in for Kevin Adams needed elsewhere, and Steve Appleton dropped six on the penultimate end. The outlook was much brighter on the other two rinks, especially for Bob Gillian and Steve Szonyi. Since Bob was slotted in at three, the pair have not lost and yesterday they made it four in a row. Along with a revitalised Merv Davies and the ever-reliable Clive de Ridder they won 21-10, good enough to take the pots. And there was a comeback victory for Graeme Winter, Karl Schuller, Les Mikowiec and Peter Blake, who trailed 6-12 on 12 ends. But the tide turned dramatically when they took six shots on the 18th end to take the lead for the first time, 17-15. Three ends later they completed a 21-17 win.

KEVIN ADAMS, who some feel has been a luxury at two in the Alan Arter rink, was called up to skip in the absence of Bill Kell... and ended up a winner. Along with the rejuvenated Alan Turner, who has taken well to using an arm, the much-improved Bill Nicoll and Ray Slimper they won 22-18. There was victory as well for Bill Yeats, another splendid exponent of the arm, Ronnie Futter, Darryl Ikin and Bob Barsden, yet another using an artificial aid. Despite losing the last four ends they clung on for a 17-14 success. That was bad enough but nothing compared to an eye-watering collapse by Derek Cope, Brian Wright, Wal Welyky and Peter Cutten. They dominated the early stages to lead 14-10 on ten ends but when they came to the last end they were still on 14, while Quinns were on 28! A four on the last meant that Merriwa only lost the aggregate by three shots.

CAMBREI resident John Avery made his Merriwa debut as third to Mitch Brown, who volunteered to skip in the absence of Bob Brennan. It was a great gesture from Mitch, who goes into hospital on Monday for a hip replacement, a condition that gives him considerable pain. Still it was worthwhile as Mitch, John, Denis Cockayne and Derek Waterman survived a mini crisis to win 20-15 at promotion-chasing Nollamara. Comfortable ahead at 14-6 on 14 ends, they were all square two ends later. Merriwa, beaten 5pts-1 at home, returned the compliment by taking five points with a much changed Brian Barron rink winning by seven shots to complete the double. Brian, Ron Waghorn, in his first game since the 31-3 disaster at Yanchep, Fred Emmerton, out even longer having suffered in the heat in the forfeited game at Ellenbrook, and Terry Skinner overcame a wobbly start (5-10 on five) to win 27-20. Terry now has five wins from five games since his return to the club. The Barry Whinfield rink (Sergio Sanabria, Eddie Eaton, Norm Davison) deals in fine margins and in a similar comeback to the previous week they fought back from 10-18 to draw level on the penultimate end (20-20) before dropping a shot on the last.
