RELEGATION is all but mathematically confirmed after Merriwa went down tamely in the must-win game at Yokine. Ironically, the rink that has had a season-long struggle was the sole winner - Graeme Winter, Karl Schuller, Les Mikowiec and Peter Blake. The first time they fell behind was on the 19th end but 'justice' was done when they took the last two ends for a 20-18 success. Another point went begging when the Steve Szonyi rink (Merv Davies, Terry Skinner, BIb Gillian) had a late collapse from 21-13 (18 ends) to a final score of 21-21. It was the first time in five games that Terry had not finished on the winning side since his return to the club. The biggest shock of the day was the demise of the division's most successful rink (Ian Edgar, Kevin Adams, Steve Appleton and Alan Arter). From 15-all on 15 they did not win another end until the 21st to go down 28-16. The Brian Barron rink had an afternoon to forget, slumping from 8-11 (11) to 13-26.

GENTLEMEN, TAKE A BOW! An eight point win was just what was needed as Merriwa lurched towards a second potential relegation. The job is not yet done but this win takes Merriwa into seventh place ahead of Dalkeith Nedlands, Wanneroo and Cambridge. The last two are among Merriwa's opponents in the final three games. Bill Kell returned after missing Thursday's win and led the team of Alan Turner, Bill Nicoll and Ray Slimper to an impressive 36-16 pots-winning performance, which included three counts of five shots. After nine ends they led 20-3 and it was a similar story for Bill Yeats, Owen Thysse, Clive de Ridder and Bob Barsden, who were 19-4 on ten ends in an inspired display against rivals on the edge of the promotion race. The mauling continued on the Peter Cutten rink (Derek Cope, Sergio Sanabria, Wal Welyky) as a six on the 13th end took them 22-6 clear. And to complete a highly satisfactory day, Mitch Brown, in his final game before going into hospital for a hip replacement, signed off with a win along with Denis Cockayne, Brian Wright and newcomer John Avery. Three successive losing ends took the score to 17-18 (18) but Merriwa responded by taking the last three ends for a 21-18 win. Having sat out much of the season, Mitch returned when the original op was cancelled and demonstrated what a great asset he is to the club.
