JULIA BARRON, Joy Gillian and Veronica Thysse got the outcome they were hoping for in the final round of the Triples as Marilyn Bradbury and Lyn Sibson fought out a relatively close contest that ensured they didn't threaten the 16-shot advantage held by the three women whose race had already been run.
A final flourish of six shots in the closing three ends gave Marilyn, Edwina Foster and Joan Bowey a 19-11 win over two of last season's champions Roberta Waldeck and Dee Winsor and skip Lyn, playing in the absence of cruising Helen Paterson.
Had either side matched the score in the other dead-rubber game, 24-7, that would have given the title to Lyn, while Marilyn would have missed out by a shot! The runaway win belonged to Soly Batka, Gail Kempton and Maggie Edgar - belatedly gaining their first win - against May O'Neill, Tina Hay and Ellaine Jopling. Ironically, it was the latter triple, who were the only team to beat the ultimate champions in the opening round.
WITH one round to go, three teams are still in the hunt for the Triples title but Julia Barron's rink put themselves in pole position after a stirring fightback in their final game.
Julia, Veronica Thysse and Joy Gillian looked destined for defeat against Soly Batka, Gail Kempton and Maggie Edgar, who were looking for their first success in the competition and at 12-5 with just six ends left, they were odds on to get off the mark.
But the tried and tested combination who have shared many triumphs together responded to the skip's insistence on one last surge to draw level on 15, go two behind on 16, and clinch a notable victory 16-14.
It meant that Veronica, Joy and Julia finished on six points with a shot difference of 16, having lost their opening fixture to May O'Neill, Tina Hay and Ellaine Jopling, which remains their only success, after going down by two shots (11-13) to Roberta Waldeck, Dee Winsor and Lyn Sibson. Roberta and Dee, along with holidaying Helen Paterson, are looking to retain their triples crown but have a massive task.
Roberta, Dee and Lyn have four points - along with Marilyn Bradbury - with a shots aggregate of 42-42. Marilyn is just ahead in second on the ladder with a shot difference of 42-40. The two teams go head-to-head in the final round... should be very interesting.
AFTER a traumatic pennant trial game on Tuesday against a Lyn Sibson-skipped rink, Julia Barron quickly wiped away the memory with a resounding 21-5 victory in the latest round of the ladies triples championship.
Julia's team of Veronica Thysse and Joy Gillian, looking much more comfortable with her mechanical arm, conceded just five singles against Roberta Waldeck, Dee Winsor and Lyn to send them from fourth to top of the ladder. They have now played three matches, winning two, to edge ahead of the Marilyn Bradbury triple on shot difference, both with four points.
Marilyn, Edwina Foster, like Julia and Roberta on the receiving end of the Tuesday thrashing, and Joan Bowey came back from 8-12 on 15 to snatch a 14-12 success against May O'Neill, Tina Hay and Ellaine Jopling.
THE Lyn Sibson trio shot to the top of the ladder with a 24-10 victory in their first entry into the round robin competition against a strong-looking Maggie Edgar team that started and ended well enough but had a disappointing middle game.
Lyn, Roberta Waldeck and Dee Winsor took four on the first end but were pegged back to 8-5 on six by Maggie, Soly Batka and Gail Kempton before a run of eight consecutive ends put the game out of reach at 22-5.
Veronica Thysse, Joy Gillian and Julia Barron brushed aside the opening round defeat to get back into contention with a nail-biting 15-11 win over Edwina Foster, Joan Bowey and Marilyn Bradbury.
Marilyn's team, that just got the better of Soly, Gail and Maggie on the opening day, found itself 3-10 adrift on nine but fought back to 11-13 on 16 only to lose the last two ends.
MARILYN BRADBURY and Ellaine Jopling, both four times winners in Triples championships, got off to the desired start in the first leg of the Round Robin competition.
Marilyn and Edwina Foster, champions in 2121/22 with Tina Hay, fought off a late rally from Soly Batka, Gail Kempton and Maggie Edgar to get home 17-13, having led 16-7 with just five ends to go.
Ellaine's last win in the triples was in 2020/21 with Veronica Thysse and Norma Futter. Now with May O'Neill and Helen Paterson, substituting for Tina Hay, Ellaine found Veronica in the opposition along with Joy Gillian and Julia Barron.
With four ends to play Julia's team held a slender two shor lead (12-10) but failed to score again as their opponents dominated the remainder of the game for an 18-12 victory.
